Purpose: It's designed to prevent leaks in threaded pipe connections by filling the gaps between the threads and providing a smooth, non-stick surface that allows the pipes to be tightened securely.
Material: Made from Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a synthetic fluoropolymer known for its chemical inertness, non-stick properties, and resistance to high temperatures and pressures.  
Usage: It's applied by wrapping it around the male threads of a pipe fitting before connecting it to the female threads.
